DIRECTOR´S STATEMENT

The process of making Triangulum began with the shooting of a scene in Berlin, which was a prologue for the film. Three characters came together in this scene, and each one was given a symbolic form who they would confront themselves with along their trajectories: one was hurt, the second was blind, and the other carried an image in her hands, which figured as a suggestion to coming events.

Two months later these three characters, who are also Triangulum’s primary crew, go to Cairo bringing 16mm cameras and film stock. Once they arrived in Cairo the process of making the film became aligned with what the filmmakers personally experienced there, in the sense that the film was developing itself as the crew was becoming involved in a situation. The first two weeks spent there were written down in the form of a script, that was, on different levels, a reconstruction through fiction of actual events. People and events would occur and become a part of the film's universe.

The shooting of Triangulum took place in the four weeks that followed. During this process the friction between the shooting experience and the actual experience intensified. The tools used were a 16mm camera, film rolls and a portable sound recorder. The method was to shoot each take, when possible, just once, in order to value each instant printed in film as an unique event. In the shootings that took place in the streets of Cairo a state of urgency was felt. It was necessary to be very fast in order to capture an atmosphere that was only sustainable for a short period of time. The shooting of a scene happened like a secret performatic action, where the crew filmed and then disappeared again, before the city had noticed how it was being manipulated, reelaborated. If there had been hesitation in the crew, then the staging could not have taken place. To find the cinematographic representation of this tension – between cultures, between people, between the two sides defined by a camera, is the challenge proposed in Triangulum.

PRESS

Triangulum, by Brazilian artists Melissa Dullius and Gustavo Jahn, is more ostensibly a fantasy yet, in using the filmmakers also as actors and scriptwriters – devising the action through being in the film – similarly shows how the use of allegory and myth can help to reveal more about our world, particularly when used in a context which in some way includes the ‘real’, documentable world. It’s about the way we perceive it, certainly, but also about the extent to which we do perceive it.

The work „Triangulum", staged and filmed in Cairo by the artists Gustavo Jahn e Melissa Dullius expands the limits of cinema, defying those who insist on maintaining distinct aesthetic forms for film and art. Putting aside such arbitrary limits, the duo strikes again with an exercise of scrambling time and space – going further on what they did on their last film "Éternau". Concerned with building their own style and geography - and succeeding in that with remarkable originality and ability, the two brazilians based in Berlin bring fresh air to the retro-appropriation practices and propose an instable narrative that, although inspired by brazilian Marginal Cinema and Glauber Rochas´s films is genuinely contemporary.
