Gustavo Jahn (Florianópolis, 1980) & Melissa Dullius (Porto Alegre, 1981), brazilian artist duo, live and work in Berlin.
They met in 1999 and formed with other young artists the collective Sendero Filmes. In this context they started shooting films in super 8mm and to experiment with photography, drawing and collage.
During the couple’s autodidact formation some essential characteristics took shape: the use of analogue media (super 8 and 16mm film, slide photography and projectors), the affiliation to cinema history and co-laboratory work.
In 2004 they founded the Avalanche collective, which was focused on the production of film, music, fashion and art. Under this association arise, among other works, the photography exhibition FICCIONISMO and the short film ÉTERNAU, which was screened and awarded in many cities in South America and Europe.
In 2006 Melissa Dullius was invited to the Talent Campus during the 56th Berlinale.
Shortly afterwards they decided to move from South Brazil to Berlin. They got on a freight ship and sailed the Atlantic towards Berlin. During the journey begins the film-in-progress FLUXUS ET REFLUXUS. From this point on they start to sign their work as a duo.
In Berlin they join a film laboratory project, LaborBerlin, which makes celluloid film post-production techniques accessible to filmmakers and artists. In this context they research on 16mm hand processing, interfering in the image formation during the photochemical process. These activities allow a regular stream of experiments with film material and simple narrative forms, which gives shape to the film series FOUND ON ABANDONED GROUND.
In 2008 they shoot in the city of Cairo the 16mm independent production TRIANGULUM, screened at the 59th Berlinale, and at the 27th Torino Film Festival, among others.
In the duo’s photographic work, mainly on 35mm slide film, their individual imageries converge in photo series which deal with the concepts of duality, reflection/refraction, repetition and reproduction. Since 2008 they present a performance series, TOWERS OPEN FIRE, which consists of them “firing” two slide projectors on a blank surface to form double images by contrast or addiction.
At the present moment Gustavo Jahn & Melissa Dullius are preparing their first feature film, "wesenlose Wälder", and working on the post-production of their new film "Cat Effekt". The film project was supported by the Step Beyond Fund from the European Cultural Foundation and was shot in Moscow in the winter of 2010.
